An Urban Intervention in Hillsdale

For half of the 2021 Fall Semester, my studio worked as a group to propose a comprehensive design which would address urban issues within the city of Hillsdale, MI. This design encouraged urban infill in the Downtown area, extended a connection between the Downtown and the main college, and created potential urban centers which could replace and improve the current suburban sprawl.

My main task within the project was to design one of these urban centers. Focused within a quarter mile radius, the area is walkable and includes public, mixed-used, and single-family residential lots. The grid is made of 60' x 120' lots that are arranged orthogonally among the streets and alleys. This grid system creates a residential area which is much denser than the current conditions yet remains comfortable and not over crowded.
